Resolven AFC Presentation Night

End of season awards were presented to the football players at an enjoyable presentation dinner held recently in Resolven AFC. Special guests in attendance were County Borough Councillor Des Davies and Resolven Community Councillor Aylwin Jones who presented the following awards:

Players’ player of the year Team A- Carl Day, Team B- Christian Arthurs

Manager’s Player of the year Team A- Carl Day, Team B- Christian Arthurs

Young player of the year  Jordan Berry

Clubman of the Year  Allister Wheeler

Top goal scorer  Christian Arthurs

Alan Wellstead Memorial Trophy  Grant Morgan

A special award was presented to Carl Day to mark his retirement as a player. Carl has played football for over 28 years with the majority spent at this club. The many tributes from past and present players showed the appreciation and admiration everyone has for Carl on and off the pitch.  He was described as a passionate player & clubman that many teams and particularly defence feared. Carl made an emotional speech thanking everyone past and present and he made a special mention to older mentors who inspired him, he also passed encouraging words to younger players to work hard, support each other and above all enjoy playing for their club, winning or losing.

The evening was a great success, well done to all who won awards. A special thanks to Allister  Wheeler and Grant Morgan for doing a sterling job at presenting for the first time.”

Resolven Library News

My name is Neal Francis and I am one of the Trustees of Resolven Library. I would like to share with you some good news we have received this week.

We have been extremely lucky in being awarded 2 grants. The 1st is a grant of £263 from Hanfod Cymru which will enable us to purchase a laminator for the community to use. Hanfod Cymru is a new national charitable fund exclusively for Wales, distributing the money raised for good causes by Loteri Cymru.

The second grant is from Big Lottery Fund Wales Awards for All. Every year, the Big Lottery Fund distributes millions of pounds of the National Lottery’s good cause money to community groups and charitable projects around the UK. They have given us £2463 which will enable us to purchase 3 new pc’s printer for use by the community and will also let us purchase a coffee machine so that people can come in and have a chat over a tea or coffee.

We can not thank both of the organisations enough for their support and I would also like to thank all those who give up their time in volunteering in the library without them we wouldn’t be able to operate. Also if anyone can give up 2 hours a week of their time we a desperately looking for new volunteers for us to be able to continue running the library for use by all in the community.

WI Success at the County Show

On Saturday 22nd July the Glamorgan Federation of Women’s Institutes held its annual show at North Cornelly. The show comprised 19 classes showcasing such skills as baking, flower arranging, pottery, vegetable growing, art, photography and many more. The competition was open to all 112 WI’s in the County.

Ynysfach WI entered into 11 classes and met with considerable success. Liz Jones was awarded 1st place in the class for ‘an edible Christmas gift’, her beautifully decorated little cakes were also considered to be the ‘Best cookery item in the Show’ and therefore she was awarded the Swansea Cup.

Congratulations Liz!

Ynysfach also received first prize in the large co-operative class in which 2 craft items, 2 cooked items and a floral arrangement are displayed to interpret a theme.

This year it was ‘ A spring event ‘ and we chose to celebrate the Malvern Spring Garden Festival.
Our items were made by Maureen Allen, Cathy Graham, Liz Jones and Jenny Colley.

Our exhibit was selected as the best co-operative display in the show and we were presented with the Port Talbot Cup.

We picked up prize points in a total of 5 classes thanks to the hard work of Christine Davies, who was Highly Commended for her lemon and lime marmalade, Cathy Graham, Kay Evans, Wendy Herbert, Carol Jeffrey, Maureen Allen, Ann Gay, Ffion Thomas, Jenny Colley and, of course, Liz Jones.  We all enjoyed a wonderful day – Well Done Ynysfach WI!
